Abstract
The history of French politics has been a varied one. In the century or two before the advent of Charles X (with whose reign this paper will be primarily concerned) a very definite evolution in politics can be traced from the absolute monarchy of Louis XIV to an extremely liberal republican form, the government of the revolution to a· liberal-reactionary period under Louis XVIII and finally to the ultra-reactionary reign of Charles himself.
