Abstract
McTeague is a naturalistic novel with some romantic interludes. This paper will not focus any attention on these interludes (e. g. the romance of Old Grannis and old Miss Baker). It will limit itself to a study of the elements of naturalism in the novel; moreover, it will study these elements only in as much as they are reflected in the life of the main character, McTeague. These elements may all be summed up in what I call Norris' s vision of the "brute'' in McTeague. Since it is this vision which refracts the main elements of naturalism in the novel, it is this vision which this paper will emphasize and draw attention to.
