Abstract

An overview of Rogers' nursing conceptual model of the science of unitary man is described. Man and environment constantly interact and exchange energy. The principles of homeodynamics (reciprocy, synchrony, helicy, and resonancy) are explained. The four phases of therapeutic touch as practiced by Dolores Krieger are reviewed. These phases are centering, scanning, unruffling, and healing. A videotape demonstrating the therapeutic touch technique is included. The research findings of Krieger and Heidt are presented. Krieger studied hemoglobin levels as an index to show the effects of therapeutic touch. This study does need more control. Heidt shows that the dependent variable of anxiety can be reduced after therapeutic touch. The need for replication of this study is discussed.
