Abstract

Each Christian age grapples with the question: what is the Church? It is a question which is by no means answered in a flash of insight, but by searching into the background and environmental conditions of the Church through the ages. John Henry Newman, an important figure in the nineteenth century Church, developed a concept of the Church which has become vital to a renewed understanding of the Church in the twentieth century.
