Abstract
Questions on the nature and trends of nursing education are many. No explicit answers are available for such questions as the following: How is liberal education related to professional education? Has a lack of concern been the responsible factor in the slow transition of nursing education from the diploma, school to the university? These issues cannot be resolved by historical analysis - nor are they completely defined. History is but one of several tools which can be utilized to help gain perspective on an issue engulfed in anxieties, fears and feelings. There is, however, a facet to this problem which is overlooked unless recourse is had to the historical review.
