Abstract
The doctrine of Christianity is real and man is real. That divine message reaches man precisely because his realness indicates that he is self-conscious. Whether it is one man aware of his unified identity or many men unified in their identification to an idea, John Cardinal Newman believes that men live real lives only through the exercise of their self-consciousness.
