Abstract

Among students for the priesthood in our diocesan seminaries there is a high drop- out percentage, particularly in the earlier years of study. There is a serious need of vocations to the priesthood and all students who have the proper qualifications along with the proper motivation are encouraged to enter the seminary and begin their studies which, if persevered in, will lead to the priesthood. It is easily understood that many of these boys, especially t hose who begin their studies in the first year of high school, are not sure of their vocation as yet, so the Church expects that a considerable number will discontinue. It merely indicates that they are convinced by that time that they are not suited for this vocation. So, the seminary administrators attribute a large percentage of the drop-outs to a factor that was anticipated in the very beginning - that for some of them this is just not their life's work.
