Abstract
Whenever a person experiences a physical trauma, such as a severe burn injury. which brings about changes in physical appearance, these changes must be integrated into the individual's already existing body image. The sudden and catastrophic trauma of a severe burn injury. with its pain, suffering, scarring, and potential disfigurement, demands a series of adjustments and adaptations on the part of the burn-injured. While making these adjustments and adaptations, the patient experiences intense threats of abandonment, loss of self esteem, and loss of love. Frequently bum-injured victims feel that they are not as whole nor attractive as they were before injury. One patient aptly expressed this sentiment by stating' "I feel trapped, trapped within the boundary of my own body." These observations demonstrate the important role body image plays in people's lives.
