Abstract

This study represents the culmination of three years of research into the thought of Merleau-Ponty. Within the scanty amount of secondary material, one may find vague reference to Merleau-Ponty's later works, The Visible and the Invisible and The Prose of the World, as involved with a new direction in, and radical reinterpretation of his thought. It is supposed that, were it not for his death, these texts would have grounded a new period in his thought, much as several contemporary philosophers have had "earlier" and "later" positions. This author accepts the radical character of The Visible and the Invisible, especially in view of the notes which constitute a major portion of the work.
