Abstract
There has been much written about the American Loyalists lately. The American Antiquarian Society is publishing all the primary documents on the Loyalists in the United States and Canada. Numerous studies are now being done on the individuals, the towns, the policies and the reasons why men of all walks of life became Loyalists. The Tories who loved America as much as the Patriots are finally beginning to earn their place in history. This has been assisted in large part by the recent developments in methodology in history, particularly the local study. Kenneth Lockridge's work on Dedham, Massachusetts and Robert Gross's book on Concord examine groups in a limited area, during a limited time period. The results have been very fruitful. By concentrating on individual towns, they were able to support or dispel generalizations made about our early culture and society.
