Abstract

The writer has observed in teaching English as a second language to pupils from kindergarten through twelfth grade in a large metropolitan school system that children of average or above average intellectual capacity generally show good progress in reading, after they have mastered the basic understanding and speaking skills of English. This is true even though the students represent a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. It would appear that the moderate or severe reading problems that are experienced by a percentage of the English as a second language pupil population may stem from causes similar to those which affect the reading achievement of native speakers.
