Abstract

Chapter Twelve of the Apocalypse is a chapter that has lately been receiving much attention. It is a very interesting and enigmatic chapter, one full of ambiguities, inconsistencies, and mysterious symbolism. With the first reading, it appears to be composed of three distinct segments or three series of events, although there is disagreement even here about where these three divisions really occur. The first six verses deal with the encounter between the dragon and the woman with child, in which the dragon attempts to destroy the child but is thwarted; the next six verses tell of the dragon's defeat and fall from heaven, which is due to the efforts of the Archangel Michael; and the last six verses resume the initial contest between the dragon and the woman.
