Abstract

The first explicit mention of poverty in the Documents of Vatican I I encourages the Church to follow Christ who was poor, and acknowledges at the same time that the Church needs human resources to carry out her mission. This mission was defined by John XXIII as being particularly to the poor. There is, in the Constitution on the Church and in the Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, a workable notion of poverty, for the Church as a whole and for individual Christians, which stands as a principle of solution to the paradox of being poor while relieving the needs of the poor. Poverty is service concretized in sharing .
