Abstract

The Automated Guideway Transit technology has a notable status in the public transportation system. AGT' s distinguished features fill the gap between heavy rail mass transit and conventional bus system. AGT systems of many kinds can be conceived. However, three classes receiving fairly general acceptance are: - Shuttle Loop Transit (SLT); - Group Rapid Transit (GRT); and, - Personal Rapid Transit (PRT).

SLT systems are the simplest of the three classes of AGT systems and are by far the best understood and most widely used. SLT systems are distinguished by one characteristic: vehicles follow unvarying paths and therefore make little or no use of switches. AGT's at Pearl Bridge, Honolulu, Hawaii; Fairlane Town Center, Dearborn, Michigan; and Williamsburg, Virginia are examples of SLT systems in the United States.
