Abstract
This chapter discusses the change in reading instruction from an emphasis on oral reading to an emphasis on silent reading. In addition, it criticizes the neglect of oral reading in modern classrooms and experimental investigations. Finally, the study's hypotheses are given, and important terms are defined.
