Abstract

The Church is a community of men who believe that there is hope for all men to live as sons of God. It is a pilgrim community alive with the love of the Spirit and moving toward greater understanding of her role in the modern everyday world. By working together, Christians hope to bring modern human existence in all its dimensions to a form more worthy of man. There are those who would question if the Church is actually doing this; if it is even able to transform itself along with the times, and if it is still true to its original mission. Charles Davis is one who thinks that the Church is not changing, has failed its original commission and, therefore, is no longer relevant. The topic of "Mutability in the Church" will be studied in the light of its treatment by Gregory Baum in his response to Charles Davis. In his book, The Credibility of the Church Today. Gregory Baum shows how he sees the Church to be unique and credible, as well as answering some of today's questions, such as: In what way is the Church changing and where is it moving? Does this change show growth and development? Is this powerful establishment able and ready to adapt to the changing self-understanding of man, and can its existing institutions become flexible and respond to the new needs of the people whom they serve?
