Abstract

One of the most important objectives of teaching reading is to assist each child to develop systematically his ability to think. Teachers of Reading must be cognizant of the stages at which these developments will most naturally take place. The development of the ability to think encompasses a number of facets of the total reading program; this paper will limit itself to the individualized approach. It is of great importance that the ability to think be developed in a systematic manner and in keeping with the child's natural unfoldment, particularly, as regards individual interests and self-pacing. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth the procedures, strengths and weaknesses of individualized reading as the writer finds them in research and in her classroom experiences.
