Abstract

On July 1, 1944, representatives of forty-four nations met at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire . The purpose of this conference was not only to strengthen the currencies of sovereign nations, but more especially to insure an international monetary mechanism free of bilateral trade agreements, blocked balances, arbitrary evaluation of national currencies , and unilateral action in competitive ex change depreciation. To achieve those goals the International Monetary Fund was established .
