Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect that creative writing has on the language skills of a fifth grade group from a school serving a low economic area in the city of Milwaukee. The range of reported IQ's is wide in this group with the majority of cases having an IQ between 80 and 100.
Creativity in this study refers to a discovery made by a child. The discovery may be of something everyone else knows, but it is new to him. The reason the word creative is used instead of discovery is that in the Milwaukee Schools, where this study was made, the teachers are quite used to hearing the term creative when it really means discovery. There is a creative writing program on the radio which many fifth grade teachers use. In the study of child development, as well as in language teaching, the therapeutic value of writing to the individual is evident. A person who can express himself in writing has found a means of letting off steam. Then too, there are the many practical situations in which effective writing and expression are necessary. The schools of today realize the obligation they have in instructing pupils in correct language skills, but the question is, how can this instruction be given most effectively.
