Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to empower the family who is caring for an infant with AIDS with the knowledge, skills and strength needed to live safely with AIDS, to cope with the vicissitudes associated with the disease and to find pleasure and gratification in their child's life. A review of the literature included (a) AIDS in the pediatric population and (b) educational needs of the family caring for an infant with AIDS. The review of the literature revealed eight categories of essential knowledge for the family caring for an infant with AIDS. It is thought that the nurse who is knowledgeable about the educational needs of the family will be able to develop and implement a teaching plan that will facilitate the family's ability to care for an infant with AIDS.
