Description
Damon Wellner
Modal Nodes: Radio Radio, 2023
Fandom: Star Wars, Elvis Costello, Saturday Night Live
Stop motion animation
Variable dimensions (3840 x 2160 px)
Collection of the creator
Rating: General Audiences
Tags: Star Wars, Figrin D'an, Modal Nodes, Elvis Costello, Radio Radio, SNL, Saturday Night Live, stop motion, toy photography, action figure collecting
Creator's notes: I wanted to make a stop-motion animation featuring the classic Cantina Band from Star Wars, Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, but I thought it would be boring to just do their one hit song from the film. This reminded me of the infamous live TV performance by Elvis Costello on Saturday Night Live in 1977, during which he started one song, but then stopped the band and burst into a totally different song, to the surprise of the audience and Lorne Michael as well. As a result, Costello was banned from the show for decades. So I used an audio sample of the actual TV appearance as the soundtrack, customizing it slightly for the Modal Nodes.

In addition to the skull in the original piece reminding me of the Bith alien heads in Star Wars, the way the Cadavre Exquis collaborative style mixes the work of different artists reminded me of the way this was inspired by three different fandoms: Star Wars, Elvis Costello, and SNL.
