Creator's Notes: I started rewatching Chuck right before I saw the project and prompts. I had last seen it in college, in like 2009. Watching it in 2024, it feels very much like it's about the cost of US military and covert operations, and war and greed generally, overall and to individuals, and how it breaks down trust and divides people who care about each other. Within the show the characters canonically turn to stories to confirm trust and guide their futures. The Identity prompt description really connected with what I was feeling and wanting to express.

Comments

I think I gave a description of the inspiration either in the initial form or when I posted to the collection on Ao3 and if you can find that use that over this bc I was kinda closer to the inspiration when I wrote that and I think I put it better. But basically: I have been watching a bunch of 00's and 10's tv, as I think many people have. I started watching Chuck and while when I watched it as a teenager it felt like a fun spy show. Watching it in 2024 it felt like it was about the weight and harm and division of US imperialism, and military and covert operations around the world, and the damage they do to people's lives when all they want is to sit together and watch Star Trek. In the show, canonically, the characters use Star Trek and fandom generally as like a shibboleth to confirm trust, and to guide their actions and identity and build hope for the future. That resonated with the identity prompt.
