The characters I created are inspired by the figures in the art piece. Initially the group brought to mind the feminist movements of the 20th century and beyond, but the more I looked at them the less distinct each figure became and I started thinking instead of the struggle for the rights of trans and other genderqueer individuals, and I chose to make my characters as nondescript as I could while still maintaining the core Star Trek philosophy of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Each has a backstory in my head that they are in some way queer, going so far as to name their ship after the Stonewall riots
