Abstract
Healthcare providers recognize the importance of the family system to patient health and wellbeing, as evidenced by the development and implementation of family-centered care models in healthcare delivery settings. Yet, only in the past few decades has there been an explicit shift within healthcare settings to welcome and include families during hospitalization of their sick child. Family-centered care is a philosophy used across the lifespan, from pediatrics to older adults, and in many healthcare settings (e.g., rehabilitation, family medicine, and palliative care) [1]. The philosophy of family-centered care contends that family members and healthcare providers must create partnerships for addressing the medical and psychosocial health needs of an individual receiving care.
