Abstract
Twenty-five or thirty years ago the selection of a football team was mainly a matter of picking out the biggest and strongest men on the squad. The weaker or lighter men were eliminated during the first weeks of practice by a series of scrimmages and by other hard bodily tests. It was a common belief that the men who withstood these first drills were the men who were of varsity caliber. One of the common methods of training a team in the early days was to have the men spend hours falling on the ball. This useless practice was supposed to harden the men and also prepare them to fall on fumbled balls during a game. Instead of hardening the players it usually resulted in a number of severe bruises and a dislocated shoulder or two on the squad.
