Abstract
As a matter of fact, the history of the Jews for the past 2600 years has been the history of Judah; i.e., of the people who inhabited Southern Palestine. For the most part, they are all descendants either of the tribe of Judah or of the "Kohanim" and "Leviim", the priestly families that resided in Judah. From the very beginning this name had a religious connotation. It is interpreted as "Praising the Lord." Hence the name "Yehudi" or "Jew" accurately describes their origin. When we speak of their role in history, it is largely the records of the descendants of Judah or the Jews that we have in mind. As Jews they have produced prophets and sages, Psalmists and lawgivers. As Jews they have preserved the Bible and its ideals, and as Jews they have contributed to every branch of the world's civilization.
