Abstract
Elizabethan plays print very few stage directions beyond the necessary entrances and exits. There is never anything like the elaborate description of setting and furniture that modern dramatists use. Rarely are there references to properties, furniture, doors, windows etc. In many cases it is doubtful whether we have directions designed to govern the actual presentation of the plays; some are manifestly mere suggestions by the author, and others are not intended for the actors, but for the readers of the play. Stage directions are scanty and uncertain.
