Abstract
There are two distinct types of reading, oral reading and silent reading, and each type calls for a different ability on the part of the child. Therefore, it is very important that we recognize at the outset these two different abilities. Both kinds of reading are now taught, but by far the greater part of our time and attention is devoted to oral reading. When we consider that after leaving school most of our reading, in fact practically all of it , is of the silent reading type, it is easy to understand that there is error in this arrangement.
