Abstract
The object or purpose of this thesis is to give a general analysis of the Crusades, taken as a whole movement. From the outset, we are endeavoring to trace the underlying causes which set the great conflict in motion. Our end object should answer the question — Were the motives for the Crusades really based on true religious principles, or were they motivated by private and selfish interests?
