Abstract
In preparing the natural ore of iron for commercial use, man has met with great success. At present, approximately 36,000,000 tons of steel are produced yearly in the United States alone. Man, however, has been confronted by an unceasing, tireless agent which tends to return the newly manufactured steel to the oxide of the iron, a condition similar to that of the natural ore. To prevent this action, man has put up a continual fight, using many preventitlves, but to date corrosion has overcome all of man’s contrivances and emerged the winner.
