Abstract
Marchantia polymorphum L. grows commonly under moist conditions, in ravines or along the sides of ditches, banks of streams, and in other similar places. It can be found in what appear to be quite dry situations, though it is more nearly correct to state that it can exist through more or less prolonged dry periods. It grows actively only when conditions are comparatively moist. Marchantia reaches its best development on damp burnt-over wooded places. Marchantia polymorphum L. appears as a flat dichotomously branched thallus, closely pressed to the substratum on which it grows. The thallus is selt-supporting, possessing chlorophyll, and rhizoids grow from the under side of the plant which not only attach it to the soil but also absorbs water and necessary salts from the soil. The mature thallus, when growing in favorable conditions, reaches from 40 to 60 millimeters in length and from 30 to 40 millimeters in breadth in thickness.
