Abstract

A. glance into the history of education reveals changes too numerous and too obvious to mention, in aims, ideals, and purposes. Likewise have changes come, in some cases, imperceptibly -- again, very deliberately in content, method, and extent. One feature that seems rooted in educational antiquity is some type of examination procedure.

Probably the best known, and certainly one to the most elaborate, of the ancient systems of examinations was that maintained by the Chinese, but the Greeks, the Romans, and many other peoples employed them as well. In fact, definite tests of what has been learned have had their place in practically every scheme of education of which we have any record.
