Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to discover how consistent the treatment of the character of Thomas a Becket by three authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries -- Douglas Jerrold, Alfred L. Tennyson, and T. S. Eliot--is with the historical figure of Saint Thomas.
The method pursued in discovering this is first, to establish the historical figure of Thomas through the use of authoritative historical sources and second, to discuss how his figure is revealed in the plays, "Thomas a Becket" by Douglas Jerrold, "Becket" by Alfred Tennyson and "Murder in the Cathedral" by T. S. Eliot.
The following books were especially helpful in affording me material for the historical background of the man and the age, Hilaire Belloc's "History of England" (v.2), Sidney Dark's "Saint Thomas of Cantebury," William H. Hutton's "Thomas Becket" and Mary Ward's "English Way.•
