Abstract
Line play in football has gradually evolved from a massed attack, as prevalent in the early eighties, to an open game that is in vogue today. Participants in the early days of football called this a "block game." The team in possession of the ball would not make any attempt to advance it if they were playing a superior team. This evil became so great, however, that a rule was enacted, whereby the team in possession of the ball must advance five yards in three scrimmages or suffer a penalty of ten yards. This was changed later on, and a team was forced to advance ten yards in three scrimmages to retain the ball.
