Abstract
In this paper an attempt is ma.de to give a brief account of the changes in the educational system of India since India's independence from Britain in 194 7, with the emphasis on aims, curriculum and methods. The changes mainly appear in primary and the first three years of secondary education, which is called middle school. The changes are the result of independent India I s desire to introduce a new system of education according to her culture, skills, traditions, habits, outlook on life and needs. The new system, called the Basic Education, or Wardha Scheme, was proposed by India's great leader, Mahathma Gandhi, in 1937.
