Abstract
All engineered structures resting on the earth are broadly divided into two parts: (1) Superstructure (building), the portion of the structure which is generally above the earth surface interface and (2) Substructure (foundation), that portion of the structure which transfers the loads to the soil at the interface. The purpose of any foundation is to transmit the loads of the superstructure safely to a hard stratum within the limits of tolerable deformation and secure from environmental effects.
