Abstract
Francis Drake played an important role in laying a groundwork for the eventual development of the British Empire. As a privateer, he looted the Spanish or gold and booty; as a navigator, he circled the globe; and as an admiral, he helped defeat the Spanish Armada. He was feared by England' s enemies, loved by her common people, and respected by all for his achievements.
