Abstract
Many centuries ago Euclid defined number as that quantity which is made up of units. Later he defined unity as that by which anything is called "one." Unity was generally defined, however, as the source of number. The earliest record of this dispute goes back to the time of Plato, for the question is posed in The Republic, "To what class do unity and number belong?" - thus placing them into separate categories. It was not until the close of the eighteenth century that unity was finally considered to be a number.
