Abstract

Personal problems often affect the student's adjustment to school, hindering his ability to develop his intellectual capacity. In the elementary school, such problems interfere with the learning and application of basic skills essential to success in high school and beyond. Thus, the earlier these difficulties are remedied, the better the prognosis for real learning, and for the development of the individual. Since effective guidance and counseling can help those who have problems, and can prevent problems from arising, it seemed a worthy subject of investigation to study what has been done in this field in the school system in which the writer has been teaching for the past six years. The results of this study will be used in suggesting improvements in and the expansion of existing programs, or the initiating of programs in guidance where they do not exist.
