Abstract

The increased complexity of life in a disturbed world has given impetus to new pedagogical theories and methods, especially in the field of reading. Today, as never before, educators recognize their responsibility to teach young people to read critically in order to prepare them for competent citizenship in a world in which many controversial problems must be solved. Teachers seek new approaches to reading improvement, for they understand that reading plays an important role in promoting the growth of the child as a whole, in forming "better men for better times." Educators are working very hard in organizing and planning developmental reading pro grams, now commonly called "life adjustment programs" which tend to give the individual many opportunities for developing to maximum capacity his spiritual, physical, social, and moral potentialities.
