Abstract

Vatican Council II has provoked eager and sometimes anxious questioning about many crucial matters, and about none so much as the primary theme of its deliberations, the nature and mission of the Church. Catholics feel most urgently the need for envisaging the Church as a whole. It will not suffice to substitute one abstract essential definition for another; what is required is a concrete image which represents the Church within the general framework of human experience and history.
