Abstract
It is the contention of many who are well acquainted with the works of Karl Marx that he was first and foremost a philosopher, a man interested in the condition of other men and devoted to promoting those changes that would both improve and perfect this condition. I share the belief that the real Marx is a philosopher, a socially oriented humanist, who saw the task of philosophy as "social criticism," and who attempted to employ social criticism in order that all men might know not only what they had been and are now, but also what they might possibly become.
