Abstract
In magnificent poetry Dante attests to the extraordinary power that the symbol of the cross holds over man's spirit: "Here memory mocks the toil of genius," What is there about this symbol that lodges it so permanently in man's heart and positions it so centrally in the universe? The cross, in its deepest significance, is the stillpoint of our turning world, as T. S. Eliot puts it. What do we really mean when we say that the cross is at the center of each man's life, as well as at the heart of the christian faith?
