Abstract
The surge of industrial and economic expansion that swept the United States after the Civil War brought on a wave of social unrest. Shattered dreams of security, comfort, and wealth haunted those who struggled to survive in a system that bred city slums, sweat shops, and political machines. Grim and determined crusaders for social reform sprang up over the land stoking the fires under the great American melting pot. Some crusaders were wild-eyed fanatics who concocted impossible schemes to level the social order, while others of a more philosophical nature presented lengthy syllogisms attacking the social structure. All of these crusaders attracted attention. In time the social question became a moral issue and spilled over into the religious arena.
