Abstract

Religious communities of women are faced with a serious crisis. There is an appalling shortage of young women entering the Sisterhood. The demand for Sisters to teach, nurse, and carry on the various works entrusted to them is far in excess of the supply. This is a grave concern of the entire Catholic Church from hierarchy to laymen. What can religious communities themselves do about meeting this crisis? One possible answer is the establishing of schools for aspirants in their community to protect and nurture vocations. Once the school is established the community faces this problem -- What factors bring a candidate for the religious life to the school for aspirants and hold her there until she is ready to follow her vocation to the religious life?
