Abstract

With brazen indifference, this macabre message was painted above the entrance to an Indianapolis, Ind., coal company in March, 1922. This obscure company, in the four years of its existence, managed to sell an indeterminate though very negligible amount of the product it purportedly moved in carload lots. Despite the lack of effective coal promotion however, the company's president, Dwight C. Stephenson, became an overnight millionaire and his office was for a few years the scene of more political activity than even the State capitol building itself.
