Abstract

John Bodin was born at Angers in 1530. After studying law at Toulouse he was given a position on the faculty there lecturing on jurisprudence. While he was still unknown he went to Paris to practice law. He was forty years old at the time. In 1566 he wrote the Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem in which he laid the foundation of the philosophy of history. In this work he put forth his theory on climate and its effect on society and government. Also, in this same work he put forth his theory of progress. Both theories were later expanded in La Republique. In 1568 he published Response aux paradoxes et L'en de Malestroet. In this book he developed his ideas on the need of free trade.
