Abstract

One spring day in 1842 three young men left the Four Courts in Dublin, walked along the River Liffey and up the hill to Phoenix Park. There under the elms, they sat and discussed Ireland's future. A foreign parliament controlled their country and foreign landlords held the masses of their people at a bare subsistence level. How could they arouse these people to unity and progress?
