Abstract
On January 14, 1766, the cry of William Pitt, "I rejoice that America has resisted" shook the British Parliament. Within ten years another cry on behalf of the American colonists reached the same Parliament as Edmund Burke pronounced his proposition for peace: "It is peace sought in the spirit of peace, and laid on principles purely pacific ••• " These cries of peace and resistance characterize the Anglo-American relations of the 1770 1 s. And these two men, the practical statesman and the political philosopher, represent the reconciliation efforts of England toward the colonies in this decade.
