Abstract
In the annals of history one can read about men beset by ambitions that cry out for fulfillment, but that are never achieved. Such a man was General John A. McClernand, who was by profession a lawyer and politician, but by ambition a military hero. His call to greatness did not find fulfillment in the deeds of the battlefield, but in the glowing reports he sent to those in authority. The battle of Fort Donelson, in which General McClernand commanded the First Division, will help to illustrate why he can be considered one of the casualties of the Civil War.
